"It's not fair!" Alice said for the upteenth time as she paced back and forth. "People go into the forest all the time. Why can't I?"
"Alice, you know why," Wendy said, trying to be patient. "There might be some dangerous creatures in there. And if worst comes to worst, I won't be able to protect you. Or Taran and Eilonwy, for that matter."
Alice just gave a groan and resumed her pacing again, which she had been doing for the past half hour. When Wendy had asked her friend's father if they could possibly go into the forest with some friends, he had immediately shot the idea down. Wendy had expected him to do that, but it seemed like Alice had higher hopes. And now that they were dashed, she was super mad. Wendy furtively tried to change the topic to something else.
"Come on Alice, why don't we pick something out for the ball?" Wendy suggested. "It's coming up in a few days, you know."
Alice sighed. "Alright," she grumbled.
Wendy breathed a sigh of relief. Hopefully, she could get Alice distracted with pretty dresses and cute shoes. She did love stuff like that.
"How about this one?" she asked. With a little flourish of her hand, the dress popped out of the closet on its own. It was a bright pink, with bows and lace everywhere. "You looked really good in it last time you wore it."
"Nah, I'm not in the mood for pink," Alice replied.
Wendy bit her lip before looking through Alice's closet again. It seemed she had an infinite amount of dresses crammed in here. Then again, she was the daughter of a lord. She could probably buy twenty more and it wouldn't even put a dent in her father's budget.
"Oh, how about this one?" Wendy asked as she made another dress float out of the closet. This one happened to be varying shades of green. "Your mother got this for your birthday last year. I'm sure she'd love to see you wear it again."
Alice shook her head. "I don't think green fits with something like the Blood Moon Festival." She walked over to her closet and started picking through her dresses. Wendy watched for a moment, wondering what her friend had in mind.
"Aha!" Alice cried triumphantly. She pulled out another dress. This one was red and black flowers sewn into it. "Now this is what I call a Blood Moon Festival dress," she said triumphantly.
Wendy smiled. "I think it's perfect."
Alice grinned back as she tossed the dress onto her bed. "Now, what about you?" she said, gazing thoughtfully at Wendy.
"Huh?" Wendy blinked in confusion. "What about me?"
"Well, obviously, you're coming to this party with me," Alice replied. "I need to pick something out for you." She immediately went back to her closet and started sorting through her dresses again.
"What? No, Alice, you shouldn't," Wendy said. Her face turned red at the very thought of going to a big fancy ball. "I'm a servant, remember?"
"Who cares? You're still my friend," Alice argued, giving Wendy a look. "Besides, Mother and Father will probably ask you to come to 'chaperone' me. You might as well look pretty while you do it."
"But, Alice-"
"No buts! You're wearing something nice and that's that."
Wendy sighed. Once Alice decided to do something, she saw it through to the end. Nothing could change her mind. So, she sat back and let Alice pull out one dress after another, trying to find the right one. Five minutes later, she saw her friend smile.
"Here we go," Alice said as she pulled out a dress that was a deep purple, with plenty of ruffles. "I think this would look perfect on you."
"Wow." That was all Wendy could say. She couldn't believe she would be wearing something this beautiful. "Alice, I...I don't know what to say."
Alice beamed, glad to see her friend so happy. "Now, let's try these on. We have to make sure they fit right."
Wendy nodded. The next few minutes were spent putting the dresses on, amidst lots of giggling and teasing. Usually, this was a pretty long process, since the dresses seemed about as big as tents. But with Wendy's powers, she was able to slide them on with hardly any effort at all. Once they were on, Alice immediately pulled Wendy over to a nearby mirror.
"Come on, come on, let's see how we look," she said enthusiastically.
Wendy, to say the least, was astonished when she saw her reflection. The dress was a little snug, since Alice was a bit smaller than her, but it still looked good on her. The purple seemed to make her eyes pop. And Alice's dress was even more beautiful. The two of them were quite a pair. "Look at us. We could pass for sisters," she said with a little laugh.
"Yeah," Alice agreed. She paused for a moment before adding "I wish you were my sister for real."
Wendy glanced at her friend. She seemed thoughtful, almost sad. Wendy bit her lip again. She could understand where Alice was coming from. The girl had been pretty lonely when Wendy had first come here. No siblings, hardly any friends, she was alone most of the time. She had gotten so much happier once they had become friends. But if anybody discovered Wendy's powers, Alice would probably get in trouble, for being friends with a supernatural. It seemed unfair, that this stupid law forced them to keep secrets. But, Wendy couldn't dwell on stuff like that. She wanted to cheer Alice up.
"Come on, Alice. We're practically sisters in every other way. We're the only ones who know each other for real. If that's not being sisters, I don't know what is."
"Really?" Alice asked.
"Really," Wendy replied with a smile.
That was enough to erase Alice's gloomy mood. "Oh, thank you Wendy!" she said happily as she hugged her friend. "We're gonna be sisters forever!"
Wendy laughed. "Right, forever," she said as she hugged her friend back. For the thousandth time since she had come here, she gave a silent thanks that she had ended up in Alice's life. She was lucky to have her.
