Hey everyone! Here's my entry for the contest! Hope you guys enjoy!
It was one of those afternoons where Taran was complaining about something that was going on his mind. He wanted to go into those woods one day with Alice, his new friend, but, of course Eilonwy, had to protect him with all her might to protect him from either getting kidnapped from he guard or something bad happening to him, like him getting bit from a wild animal.
“Seriously, Eilonwy, why can’t we just go play in the forest.” He complained as he angrily threw a rock in the water. She then rolled his eyes at him and he growled at her. “Because..” She paused with a low sigh before saying something to him as a reason why he could not go into the woods. “Its because, you know how mother would be if I let you go out on your own. Also, remember what Wendy said.. she does not want Alice to get in trouble..” She responds, and can imagine how mother would feel if she disobeyed her. He then gave out a small sigh of sadness; to cheer her brother up, she just remembered that the Blood Moon Festival would be around the corner.
“Hey, Taran, would you like to get our costumes for the festival?” He then looked at her, and thought that being at a festival would be more of a girl thing. “That’s a girls thing…” He pouted, and thought that it would be awkward to just be the only guy there. “Will there be other lads my age at the place?” He asked, with a small sigh. He could imagine being the laughing stock, since he’s the only young man there. So, far, the only kids their age were just Wendy and Alice, but, they were girls. As Eilonwy heard his question, she shrugs, as she did not see any young guys around their age while walking around. “Well, to be fair, I have no clue, but, Alice, I believe may be there, so, you can always play with her once we get there.” She said, and remembered those two becoming best friends.
He did think of Alice being a good friend, and thought on how much fun they would have together once he arrived, so, he ends up changing his mind a couple of seconds later to go to the event. “Well, sure.” He said, with a small grin, and she claps her hand together. “Perfect~” She exclaimed, and drags his hands to the shops. All the costumes were all expensive, and she did feel bad that she did not have enough money to buy something for the both of them, and then just remembered that mother sews. “Time for plan B.” She thought to herself, and walked him home.
Mother was cooking some bread and butter for her two children until she heard the door knock. She saw through the door that her kids were home and she smiles at them. “Welcome home.” She greeted, with a grin. Eilonwy had a sad look on her face, as she stepped him while Taran goes into his room to play with his sword.
“What is it sweetie?” She asked, as she saw her daughter looking sad. Mother hated to see her own daughter sad like this and gently uses her hands to touch her face to wipe her tears. “Well, there’s this festival coming up in the castle… I wanted to buy these outfits for me and Taran to go, but, I know how you feel about the expensive prices..” She said, while sobbing. Mother sighed, as she wished that she was rich to get the outfits. “Eilonwy, remember all the times where I taught you on how to sew clothing?” Her daughter, looking up at her, felt like the idea of making dresses instead of buying them would make them look lame.
“Mother, Taran and I would look strange..” She pouted, and had her head down; she did imagine on how they would be laughed at because of their silly clothing compare to other dresses she could imagine the other women would be wearing. Her mother looked up at her and shakes her head, with a small chuckle. “Don’t be silly, I’ll make you the best outfits..” Eilonwy, still hating the idea, felt like she had no other choice. “Well, then. I guess, that could be our last resort..”
She then took out her sewing basket, including material, needles, and threads for the two of them. “Before we start, I’ll go let Taran know what we’re doing.” Eilonwy said, and went into their room where Taran is pretending to be a pirate.
“AAAARRRGGGHH.. Take that, ol’ captain.” He called out, in a playful mood.
“Taran, mother and I are going to make the costumes.” She stated, and he puts the sword down on the bed.
“You’re kidding..” He stammered, with a shocked tone in his voice.
“No, mother can’t afford our outfits..” He grumbled, after hearing that.
“Well, make them good.” He said, and went back to playing.”
She then went back to mother, and the two started to go to work. Mother and Eilonwy were working on the outfits for at least a couple of days, which included breaks and fitting in between. After a couple of days on working, the two outfits were finally finished.
Eilonwy had a dress that was pink with some shimmery texture on the sides. Her dress also included some puffy sleeves, which would go really comfortable across her shoulders. It even had some buttons on the back. Taran’s outfit was a knight’s costume, except that the texture of the outfit was softer, unlike the steel knight outfits that one could see in a castle. Of course, mother wanted him to feel more comfortable so, she thought that soft would be best for her son.
Eilonwy, seeing the two outfits, made her feel not only astonished, but, also, very glad that Plan B worked out really well, as she knew that mother had material to work with. Although they were a poor family, mother did collect material from stores, and luckily, some were at a cheap price, but they were useable for projects. “Mother, our hard work, turned out so nicely..” She exclaimed and gave her a hug. “Anything for my darling children.” She responds, and kisses her cheek. Eilonwy runs back to Taran’s room, and taps his shoulder. “The outfits, are finally ready.” She grabs his hand and walks to the main room, where the outfits were prepared. Taran, seeing his outfit, had his eyes widened, as he had no words for this. “Whoa, this is amazing..” He said, with a small shocked tone, as it was a good shock.
“Well, let’s try them on.” Mother suggested, and the two siblings tries on the outfits.
The daughter was the first to come out, and swirls around. “What do you think?” She asked, with a small girly giggle. Mother clasping her hands together, looked at her daughter, and smiles. “Splendid.” She said, with a tear coming out of her eye.
“How about me?” Taran, called out, and posed as though he was ready for a sword fight.
“Taran, my son, you’re ready to swarm the young ladies.” Elionwy chuckled at that comment. “Ladies, here comes Taran the knight!” He said, with a smooth accent. When hearing that, mother and Eilonwy chuckled at his playful comment.
As soon as the night came, the two were on their way and mother sobbed happily, as she saw her two children going to the grand festival.
