Authors note:
Hello guys, I just thought I’d drop in and give a tiny bit of context to my submission <3
This story is based in the previous Blood Moon festival which occurred 5 years ago. I will make sure this is clear but I just thought I’d let you know. As a result of that Rapunzel’s mother, Lady Victoire, is still alive and this will probably won’t be the only story that she will appear in
I wasn’t sure what the Gods and Goddesses names were for this RP, so I made a lot of stuff up. That being said I hope you enjoy
P.S: Suzanne is the head housekeeper and Victoire’s close friend
Balls and soirees held by the Royal family were, without a shadow of a doubt, Rapunzel’s favorite parties. Beautiful ball gowns, elegant decorations and delicious food, no other celebration could compare to them. But- in the young girl’s mind- nothing could compare to the Masquerade Ball that only occurred every five years. The mystery, the suspense and the magic surrounding this special night made it a social gathering that the young heiress could not pass, not for all the herbology books in the world.
Tonight’s masquerade- in particular- was special as it was the first ball Rapunzel had attended since her 12th Birthday. Her mother’s health had been declining in recent years and as a result, the Corona estate had not been involved in many social gatherings. So of course, the young woman was extremely excited for this celebration.
“Rapunzel, dear, can I come in?”
The blonde girl jumped as her reading session was interrupted. The girl sat up in her bed, putting the book down to one side and smoothing down the exquisite gown she was wearing. For her costume she had chosen to attend as Durona, Goddess of Earth and Protector of the Fae. Fashioned to look like a rose, the skirts of the dress was formed of mock petals which were all dyed differing shades of pink from the deepest Amaranth to the lightest rose. The corset was green with beaded detailing of vines and buds and no sleeves. A crimson ribbon was tied around her neck, in reference to the Goddess’ dark origin story. Her long, thick blonde hair that fell down to the backs of her knees was tied intricately into a plait with fresh white roses braided into it, although it was now slightly messy.
“Yes, mother!”
The young girl called, attempting to move the flyway strands of hair out of her face. Victoire opened the door to her daughter’s bedroom and gasped.
“You look so beautiful!”
The woman gushed, gliding gracefully into the room and enveloping the girl in a hug. The older woman clasped her hands together in delight, taking a step back from the teenager
“Come on then, give me a twirl darling.”
She beamed at her daughter. The girl stood and gave a small spin before turning back to her mother with a smile. As the girls eyes left her mother’s face however, the smile began to falter.
“Mother, you’re not dressed! We need to leave in an hour, I was waiting for you.”
The woman looked at her daughter’s distressed face and gave a soft chuckle. The Lady- though her daughter would swear she was as beautiful as always- was showing signs of illness, her usually rosy cheeks were hollow and her bright eyes were now tired and had heavy bags. Her soft, pink lips were chapped and her once healthy body was now thin and brittle.
“My dear, I cannot go.” She said as delicately as she could “The Doctor says it wouldn’t be wise in my state, and Suzanne practically had a break down when I told her I would be attending. Odette and John will look out for you, angel. Just go have fun, you don’t want to be cooped up in here forever.”
Rapunzel went quiet, her shoulders dropped and her eyes fell to the floor. She knew her mother was ill and that this was for her benefit, but it seemed unfair for her mother to miss out on the ball. Victoire sighed and pulled her only child in for another hug.
“I’m sorry, sweetheart.”
The two stayed like that for what seemed like an age before the older woman pulled away and reached into the pouch she had around her shoulder
“I have a gift for you, lovely. For good luck.”
Victoire pulled out the item inside the pouch. At first glance, one may have thought it was intricately sewn golden lace but it was in fact actual gold that had been painstakingly bent into a beautiful and delicate mask, with crimson ribbon used to tie it. Rapunzel stood in awe of its beauty, she’d never seen anything so remarkable in her young life.
“I wore it on the ball I met your father. We danced the night away, he was so handsome and I was so young.”
The tired Lady let out a happy sigh
“I was a couple of years younger than you but he was nearly a man by then… It was love at first sight.”
The older woman had a dreamy look on her face before handing the mask to her daughter, who delicately plucked it from her mother’s fingers.
“Oh, mother! I’ll be sure to take good care of it.”
The young girl said, turning the mask around in her hands. Her mother gave her a smile before taking the mask. She turned the younger girl around by her shoulders, pulling the mask over her face and securely tying the ribbon over the top of her daughter’s thick plait. The older woman gave a sad smile and kissed her daughter’s forehead.
“If only your father could see you now.”
