After all the craziness that had happened at the ball, Alice had had second thoughts about her original plans to journey to the woods alone. There had been some scary creatures at the ball: a dragon, a wicked-looking lady, and angry spirits. Just thinking about it gave Alice the heebie-jeebies. But, after some thought, she decided to go ahead and go through with her plans. She just hoped her parents didn't find out, or Wendy for that matter. Any of them would get super mad if they knew what she was doing. But Alice felt like her knowledge of supernatural things was so limited, and Wendy was reluctant to talk about it. She wanted to understand the world her friend came from. So, she went into the woods, lantern in hand as she wrapped her cloak more tightly around herself. The forest seemed to be both enchanting and a bit spooky. It reminded her of the books she read sometimes, about heroes who journeyed into mystical forests to slay monsters or visit a witch that could predict the future. Thinking about those stories relaxed her a little, and she was soon looking about with curiosity instead of apprehension.

Helga was wandering the woods in her unicorn form, she heard footsteps and saw a young girl carrying a lantern with her into the woods. The girl was a maiden still, she could sense that much but Helga wondered why a girl would risk going into the woods all by herself. For there was no one with her and it seemed like the girl was a little afraid of what could happen as she should be. Helga watched from the safety of the trees until finally she decided the girl truly was alone and moved towards her in a graceful trot until she stopped a few feet away from the girl. She didn't want to frighten the girl off so she stayed where she was, waiting for the girl to either approach her or run.

Alice heard something, making her stop in her tracks. She listened for a moment. It sounded like...a horse? When something emerged from the woods, she realized her guess was close, but not quite correct. The sound had actually been coming from a unicorn. "Whoa..." was all Alice could say. She had read about unicorns, of course. What little girl hadn't? But seeing one up close was an entirely different experience. Alice never could have imagined how beautiful a unicorn actually was. She never expected to run into one her first time going into this forest. Could she pet it? All the stories said unicorns were gentle creatures, especially towards girls. Alice approached the unicorn, one hand out. hoping she wouldn't startle it. "It's okay, I'm not gonna hurt you," she said, her eyes fixed on the majestic beast before her.

Helga lowered her head and slowly stepped towards the girl. She allowed the girl to pet her and then knelt at her side so the girl could get on if she wanted. It had been some time since she had had the pleasure of letting anyone ride her. When a unicorn allowed someone to ride them, it was a show of trust. Something that wasn't very easily given at times and Helga was a very proud unicorn. It was something she was trying to work on, but she supposed this could be a good step.

Alice found it remarkable that the unicorn let her pet it. Alice moved slowly, still afraid that she might spook it. She knew she was lucky to be able to do this. Even more surprising, the unicorn dropped down and knelt next to her. Alice blinked. Was it seriously offering her a chance to ride it? If Wendy were here, she would probably hesitate, but Alice didn't want that to get in the way of things. If you hesitated too often, you let all the good things in life pass you by. Alice was determined to make the most of this opportunity. She climbed onto the unicorn's back, fumbling slightly with her lantern. But she managed to get on without too much trouble. She couldn't help but give an excited giggle. Her, riding a unicorn! She never dreamed this would actually happen, yet here she was. It made her positively giddy.

Once the girl was situated on her back, Helga moved out in a graceful trot. All girls deserved to have something to look forward too, even if the girl was human. Helga didn't sense anything strange about her which made her even more interesting. What was a girl doing wandering the woods at night? Didn't she know it was dangerous? There were far worse creatures that could harm a girl and enjoy it! Which made Helga wonder what she could possibly have been thinking.

The unicorn trotted slowly, but that was fine by Alice. She was still marveling at her luck. She almost wished she could tell Wendy, but she would probably get scolded for coming out here. She just couldn't help it though. She was curious about all this stuff, and nobody really wanted to talk about it. She did acknowledge that they had a good reason, though. Most people around here freaked out at the very mention of supernatural creatures, and the most paranoid ones were likely to report to the authorities. But Alice stubbornly felt like they could tell her. She could be trusted. After all, Wendy trusted her enough to tell her about her powers. Shouldn't that mean that she can know more? She sighed. "You're lucky you're a unicorn," she said, giving the unicorn a little pat on the side of its neck. "It's so boring being a human. Everyone's paranoid about your safety, you can't cast spells or turn into dragons. It stinks sometimes."

Helga listened and let out a silent huff before she stopped in her tracks. "You really should be grateful, if you were one of us you'd be hunted down." She said as she turned to look over at Alice. "Being supernatural or a fantasy creature for that matter, it's not all fun and games." She continued before she kept moving. Helga knew she probably had given the poor girl a fright just by speaking. "There are many of my kind who would like the chance to be seen as normal." The last word was said in a bitter tone.

Alice gave a startled squeak. "Whoa! Sorry, I...i had no idea you could talk," she said. The unicorns in her book were usually silent, like regular horses. Then again, maybe they just didn't choose to speak. Nevertheless, the unicorn didn't seem to agree with what Alice said a whole lot. Alice gave a little frown. Wendy would say the same thing when Alice wished she could have powers like hers. Just moving stuff with your mind, it sounded so amazing. But Wendy was much like the unicorn, and always said that she would love to be normal. "If I was in charge, you guys wouldn't be hunted at all," she said, giving a little pout. "I mean, you're all so special." Granted, some supernatural stuff was pretty scary, like the dragon and that spirit lady at the ball. But Alice felt like she could deal with that if people like Wendy and this unicorn could roam free, without worrying about being arrested or killed.

Helga couldn't help but laugh a little at the girl's comment, "I sometimes wait to know what my rider is like before I speak." She said gently. The girl seemed earnest when she spoke about freeing her kind. "I've heard rumors about what happened during the Masquerade Ball, were you there that night?" Helga asked curiously as she continued moving forward. She knew of course that supernatural and fantasy creatures had all attacked the ball in a surprising show of force. There had been many casualties that night, one of whom was a spirit that had attacked Claude Frollo. Not that Helga cared for such matters, she would have preferred it if that old wind bag had finally died.

That kind of made sense. Alice had heard varying accounts on the kind of people unicorns appeared before. Some said it was girls in general. Some said they only came to good-hearted people. Alice kind of hoped it was the latter, even though she was disobeying her parents' rules at the moment. She did try to be good, most of the time. She nodded when the unicorn asked if she was at the ball. "Yeah, it was scary," she said. "There was this really creepy lady there and she summoned all these scary spirits." She paused before adding "But I know not all of you are like that. I mean, you're pretty nice." Then again, all unicorns were probably nice. It was kind of in their nature. At least, that was what Alice assumed.

Helga frowned as she started talking about what had happened that night. Things in the Kingdom were becoming steadily worse it seemed. She had a feeling that there would be more incidents that would soon follow. "So you say but I know several who wouldn't hesitate to hurt a human just because of what's happened to our kind." Helga pointed out. It was a sober thought but a true one, and she hoped that Alice could tell how serious she was being. "Why were you wandering the woods? Hasn't anyone told you how dangerous it is out here?" Helga asked after a moment.

Alice just gave a little nod. She knew the unicorn had a point. Some supernaturals hated all humans because of this new law, and wouldn't hesitate to kill them. Alice naively thought that that would never happen to her, though. She figured that once she explained that she was nice, and was even helping a fellow supernatural, everything would be fine. She didn't understand that some people's minds couldn't be changed, or that they might not even want to listen to what she had to say. "I wanted to do something on my own for once," she said. "My parents like to keep me cooped up, and if they do let me go out, it's always with somebody else in tow. Usually, that's one of the servants, Wendy. Don't get me wrong, she's super nice, and she's one of my best friends. But she hovers around me all the time, it's so stifling."

Helga couldn't imagine why anyone would want to do that but the girl had mentioned feeling like she felt cooped up. An understandable notion but one slightly foreign to Helga, "That sounds hideously boring." She said eventually, in truth she was sure she might not have lasted as long as the young girl had. "Surely they let you have some sort of freedom." She said after a moment, though in truth considering how young the girl was she had a feeling that would not be the case. "How did you manage to slip past Wendy? You did mention that she hovers around you yes?" Helga asked gently.

"Not much. They keep saying I'm too little," Alice said. "I'm not so little anymore. It's not like I'm five. I'm ten years old now. I can be responsible...most of the time." Alice figured her parents were so protective of her because she was their only child. Not to mention, they were still kind of spooked by all the supernatural stuff. It wasn't like they out-right hated the creatures like some people, but they were uneasy about them. Alice hoped that one day, she could change their mind. Nothing was ever really all good or all bad. There was always both, and the supernatural was no exception. "She's usually finishing up chores at this time," she said. "Or she goes to bed early. She gets tired sometimes, with her work and stuff." Being a servant was probably draining, and Wendy had a little more than usual to do since she now had to look after Alice whenever she wanted to go into town. She was sure Wendy didn't mind, though. It gave them more opportunities to spend time together.
