Helga listened carefully, while it seemed the girl had everything planned out, there was something that wasn't quite adding up. "Won't Wendy get in trouble if your parents discover that you've gone off all on your own?" Helga asked eventually. She knew Alice was young and slightly impulsive but she also knew actions had consequences. If Alice had met anyone else in the woods, other then Helga, things might have turned out much differently.

Alice frowned. She hadn't thought of that. If she got caught, her parents might admonish Wendy for not keeping an eye on her. "Well..." Alice paused, trying to come up with some kind of answer. She didn't want to start feeling guilty about this. She just wanted to explore, to see things for herself. Was that so wrong? She wanted some adventure, and the forest seemed the best place to get it. "Well, if I don't get caught, then it won't be a problem," she finally replied. "As long as my parents or Wendy don't know I come out here, then everything will be fine." She paused again before adding "You're not going to tell anybody, are you?"

Helga chuckled, "Who would I tell? I don't spend much time in town, but don't worry your secret is safe with me." She said and that was when they reached the edge of the forest, the view in front of them was incredible. "It's late enough I could take you back to your home, just tell me where to go. I wouldn't want to see you get hurt." Helga admitted gently. More like she wouldn't be able to stand it, young maidens getting injured always sat wrong with a unicorn.

Alice smiled, glad to see that the unicorn would keep her secret. Maybe someday, she would tell Wendy about this and the adventures she had had. But for now, she would keep it to herself. She glanced down when the unicorn offered to take her home. It was getting rather late. She knew she should probably head back before somebody discovered she was out of bed. She didn't want to push her luck anymore than she already was. "Are you sure you're okay with that?" she asked. "If any paranoid people see you, they might panic." Granted, a unicorn wasn't scary at all, but still, Alice knew that there were plenty of people in town who would report any supernatural creature, whether they were a harmless unicorn or a fearsome dragon.

Helga contemplated Alice's point, "Good point, if you get off I can change into something more suitable." She said with a shake of her mane. She lowered herself so that Alice could dismount easier, "Give me one moment." Helga continued as she waited for the girl to get off. Changing into a human required a lot of concentration and focus. Over the years, Helga had perfected the technique so it would only take a matter of moments to shift.

"Oh, right." Alice hopped off of the unicorn's back when she lowered herself. Would the unicorn turn into a human, so she could blend in more? Some unicorns in stories did that, although more often than not, it was because of a wizard's spell rather than their own magic. It sounded like a cool ability to have though, to be able to change from an animal to a human. Alice kind of wished she could do something like that. She could turn into a bird, and fly from her bedroom window whenever she wished. Or she could turn into a little mouse and be able to hide anywhere. Now that would be interesting.

Helga stepped back and concentrated, a faint light grew from her body. Moments later a young woman stood there wearing a simple white dress. Her long golden hair flowed over her shoulders and seemed to empathize her features. Helga made a face, it always took some getting used too the transformation bit anyway. The human form was so constricting, she plucked at the hem of her dress with a distasteful look. "How's this?" She asked Alice as she raised her gaze to meet Alice's eyes.

While some might have seen it as a downgrade, Alice felt like the unicorn was just as beautiful as a human. Her hair was like gold and every feature on her body was perfect. This was the kind of maiden Alice read about in her stories, the girl that men would battle dragons and start wars over. "Wow, you're so pretty!" she exclaimed happily. "I wish I looked like you." Everyone kept saying that Alice would look beautiful when she got older, and she hoped it would be true. She had seen how her parents could still make heads turn whenever they went to parties or any kind of social gatherings, and Alice hoped she would end up like that as well. She liked getting attention.

Helga raised an eyebrow at the girl's enthusiasm, "You look just as pretty Alice, and one day you'll be a lovely woman." She said and meant it, "Now why don't we get you home?" She offered, being back in the human body that she wore occasionally took some getting used too. In fact she was only just adjusting to the feeling that came with appearing human, it felt like her entire being was becoming more limited. A feeling that she didn't particularly enjoy but one that she bore anyway.

Alice nodded. Getting home was the main objective now. While she would have liked to explore more of the forest, she was happy with what she had found tonight. "Right. Um...home's this way," she said, pointing ahead of her before briskly walking down the street. Her home wasn't too far from here, which made sneaking out pretty convenient. "Hey, do you have a name?" Alice asked the unicorn. Some unicorns had names, others didn't. Alice guessed that this one probably did, since she could turn into a human and stuff. She had to go by something while she looked like a woman.

Helga nodded and followed Alice, "My name is Helga or at least that's what I prefer to go by when I'm in human form." She explained. Her eyes took in the sights of the town at night. It wasn't very often that she ventured into town like this and it was quite fascinating. She was always surprised by humans and what they could come up with. They might be the cause for her race's slow extinction but she had to give them some credit for being able to invent and create. "What's your name?" She asked Alice after a moment as she glanced down at the girl next to her.

"Oh, it's Alice, Alice Liddell." Alice felt dumb for not saying her name earlier. Her mother had taught her better manners than that. But Helga didn't seem to mind. "So, have you been around here long?" Alice asked curiously. She figured she might as well ask another question or two before they got to her house. Helga definitely seemed the mysterious type, but that just made Alice all the more curious. Wendy kept saying that would get her in trouble someday, but Alice tended to ignore that. What was the worst that could happen?

Helga smiled at the question, "You could say I have been here for my whole life. I've lived for several centuries and I've seen a lot during my years." She admitted, her expression dimming a little bit as she thought of her people. "There used to be more of my kind you know, Paradise was one of the first places we called home. It used to be a lovely valley with all kinds of springs and lakes. All different kinds of fairies and even elves used to dwell with us here." Helga added thoughtfully. "It was beautiful, and very peaceful but then time passed and things changed." Humans had arrived and slowly her race had diminished.

"Whoa..." was all Alice could say in response. Helga was several centuries old? That was mind-boggling. Alice had never met somebody that old before. And the way she described Paradise as it used to be, it sounded so marvelous. She would have loved to see it. Who wouldn't want to live in a place where fairies and elves were just a few blocks away? It sounded like a fairy-tale. "Do you think we can ever go back to that?" she asked. "It sounds nice." Maybe if that stupid law was removed, there was a chance it could happen. Maybe it wouldn't be exactly the way Helga remembered, but it could be close.

Helga frowned at the question, "I don't think so, mostly because there aren't as many of my kind as there once was." She pointed out. The truth was hard for her "I do hope that one day things will change but with how things are becoming, I'm afraid nothing will change." It was hard to realize that there might no longer be fairies or unicorns. It wouldn't be long though before they passed into legend and myth, much like the ancient dragons of old. "It is good to know that there are some humans who don't entirely despise us." She added with a soft smile down at Alice.
