After her ride in the woods, Odette made it back to the castle. She hoped no one had noticed her absence. However with how her parents had doubled the guard over her, she was fairly sure that someone would report her. She made a face as her handmaiden started up the bath for her. "Do you need help disrobing Miss?" Her maidservant asked with her head lowered once the tub had been filled with hot, steaming water. Jolted out of her thoughts, Odette shook her head "No thank you." She said warmly and watched as her handmaiden left to give her some privacy. Odette always tried to be respectful to the servants, they deserved it after all. Struggling with the laces on her gown, Odette finally managed to get out of her gown, which puddled to the floor around her ankles. After that she had to take off her intimates, which took a little more work but once she was free she slipped into the warm bath. The sweet smell of rose petals hit her nose as she leaned back in the tub.

Phoebus made his way through the halls of the castle, his head in a fog from being woken from his nap. He ran his hand through his hair as he adjusted his uniform. One of his men had found him earlier, panicking that the princess had left alone so late in the evening. Since he was Captain of the Guard, it was his job to deal with issues like this.
Approaching Odette's door, he swiftly knocked three times before letting himself in. Usually, he would wait for permission, but it was already late in the evening and he didn't have the patience. Closing the door behind him, he spoke as he turned to face the room. "Pardon the intrusion your highness, but my guards tell me-" His words slowly fell to a stop as he realized what he had just walked in on. He stood there, dumbfounded before finally gaining his wits. "M-My apologies miss..." Phoebus quickly turned his back to her, knowing that if her father knew about this that he'd be in a world of trouble.

Odette had just reached for her dressing gown when the knocking started. She wasn't at all prepared as Phoebus walked in unannounced. She slipped back into the tub with a little cry, "I realize why you're here Captain, but please wait next time for me to get at least somewhat prepared." Odette admonished once she got her courage up enough to get out of the tub. She reached for a towel and dried herself off before pulling on her dressing gown. A light blush warmed her face as she wondered how much Phoebus had seen. "Now I believe you came for a lecture correct?" She asked once she had arranged her long, curly blonde hair to fall gracefully over one shoulder. "You can turn around now." She added as an after thought.

Phoebus hesitated a moment before slowly turning back around to face her. He allowed a small apologetic bow to her before he continued with what he was going to say. "Your father will be very angry to hear that you went out on your own. Thanks to that, my men and myself included will probably be punished. You know how strongly his highness feels about your safety." He gave her a hard gaze before he continued. "You must promise me that you will not do this again." Phoebus hated lecturing her, it was something he was never good at, but at times like these it was necessary. The King had become more protective of his children and that was not something to be toyed with.

Odette had the grace to look ashamed, "I never meant for you or your men to get punished. I'll have a word with my father, don't worry I'll make sure to straighten this out." She said eventually. "And I promise I won't sneak away again." She said after a moment, hating how tiny her voice sounded in that moment. All she had wanted was some freedom, and for that she had probably cost Phoebus a lot more. "You probably think I'm a silly little girl with stupid dreams." She said with a bitter smile. This wasn't the first time Odette had run off after all and Phoebus was someone who didn't like chasing after her. "I just don't want to be a Princess...father had some news today." She added with a grimace.

Phoebus sighed and relaxed his attitude. She's always had a knack for making him a little softer while he was on duty. "I don't think you're silly. I know all of these changes are hard for you." He took a few steps toward her and moved a strand of loose hair from her face before placing his hand gently on her shoulder. Ever since the proclamation, everyone had been on edge, he forgot to even think about how she felt about it. He knew the king had plans for his children, but unfortunately he never had the rank to learn what it was. "If you want to talk about it, I'll listen." A small smile flashed across his face as he looked down at the princess.

Odette felt her smile slowly return as he gently pushed some of her hair back. At his words she nodded, "No one else has been told, so what I am about to tell you is supposed to stay a secret." She said and met his gaze, silently trying to convey the seriousness of what she was about to say. "Father has arranged betrothals for both John and myself." She finally said. "I know it's silly, but I was hoping to marry for love." She added with a roll of her eyes.

Phoebus gave her a comforting squeeze as he nodded to her words. He knew how serious royal secrets were, and the last thing he wanted was for her to get in trouble for telling him. At the news, he frowned and took a short step back. "You know there isn't anything I can do to stop this...Believe me, I would if I could." Even he knew how important love was in this day and age, he was lucky to have Jasmine by his side.

Odette sighed and nodded, "I know I wouldn't feel right asking that of you anyway." She admitted with a small smile. She would just have to work something out on her own, much as she wasn't looking forward too it. "That's why I ran, I didn't want to face it and that was silly of me. I should have at least waited to meet the Prince of Maghden, who knows? Maybe he's a nice enough Prince." She said even though she wasn't entirely sure she believed that herself.

Phoebus watched her, annoyed that he couldn't do anything to help the conflict in her mind. He took her hand lightly in his and caressed his thumb across the top. "Well next time you feel like running way, come find me. I'll take you out to the forest and you can do whatever it is that you do out there. It's my job to keep you safe and happy." He smiled as he placed a gentle kiss on her hand before releasing her. "Who knows? Maybe this is all for the best. You just have to go with it for a little while."

Odette looked up at him in surprise, "You mean it?" She asked with a wide smile breaking out on her face. The thought of being allowed to leave the palace walls made her heart soar. "I mean that would be so great! Thank you!" She said and hugged him, impulsively forgetting all about propriety as she did so. "I really hope you're right, I want to make my parents happy but I also want to help the people. And if making a good alliance does that then, then maybe I can help change things." She said thoughtfully as she pulled back.

Phoebus was caught off guard at her sudden hug, but he didn't mind. He knew Odette had good intentions and someday she would make a great queen. "I admire you for being so open minded princess." A smile fell across his face before he took a step back from her. He couldn't imagine being forced into a marriage like that or even giving up his happiness for his duty to the kingdom.
(sorry for the short post lol I wanted to respond before I had to go to work this morning)

Odette laughed, "I have to be...it's part of being Royal." She said the last word with a little roll of her eyes. "But I do want to try and make things easier for those who are different. I know John feels the same way as I do." She admitted cautiously. Saying as such even as the King's daughter could prove dangerous. However she had a feeling she could trust Phoebus with this confession. Odette cleared her throat and sat down on her bed, "It's all because of that creep Claude Frollo." She added under her breath. Claude Frollo was the religious leader in the town, his rank falling just under that of the King's himself. People feared him almost as much as the King these days. He had been the one to quietly urge the King to make the Proclamation in the first place. Ever since then, it had seemed like Frollo's greed and lust for power had only grown with each execution that occurred.

Phoebus twisted his mouth into a frown as he leaned against the wall of her room. Claude Frollo had to be his least favorite person in town. Because of the man's high rank, Phoebus had to deal with him in occasion and ever since the proclamation, his hate grew stronger for him. He never understood why the King relied on that man.
"Why does he get a say for your future?" Phoebus blurted the words out, disgust obviously showing in his voice. His eyes widened as he realized what he had just said and quickly bowed to the princess. "Pardon me your highness, I spoke out of turn." Talk like that could get anyone in trouble, even for the Captain of the Guard.

Odette turned to look at him with some surprise at his outburst but she didn't look bothered by his words. "I've wondered that myself, Frollo's the one who helped start that proclamation too. I'm afraid Frollo might be trying to force my father off of the throne. Make him appear weak in the eyes of the people, I can already see the signs." She admitted, the fears had bothered her more over the years as Frollo had become a more permanent fixture in her life. "Then again I could just be imagining the entire thing." She said with a grimace. No one would listen to a Princess next to the Claude...the only other one who understood her fears was John. (Would it be ok if Frollo made an appearence?  ) |
